Heritage Offers Iconic Carson City Double Eagle Certified by NGC

Posted on 2/13/2025

The coveted US coin leads a group of more than 800 NGC-certified coins in the late February auction.

An impressive selection of more than 800 coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) is being offered in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale that is focused on US numismatic rarities. Online bidding is already underway for Heritage Auctions' Long Beach Expo US Coins Signature Auction 1381, which will be held on February 28, 2025.

The top highlight of the auction is an 1870-CC Double Eagle graded NGC AU 53 (lot 3441). Struck in the first year of coinage operations at the famous but short-lived branch mint in Nevada, these coins have the lowest mintage of the Carson City series at 3,789. Today, only a few dozen are thought to exist in all grades, none of them in Mint State, according to the auction house. Bidding can be expected to go well into the six figures for this gold rarity.
