NGC Ancients-certified Coin Tied to Shahpur I Expected to Realize Six Figures in Goldberg Auction
Posted on 7/10/2025
An impressive selection of more than 250 US, world and ancient coins that are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) are being offered in a sale presented by Goldberg Auctioneers, including one of the rarest Sasanian coins known. Online bidding is already underway for Goldberg's The July Coin Sale, which concludes July 28, 2025.
The top NGC-certified highlight of the auction is a Sasanian Empire, Shahpur I (AD 240-272) Gold Double-Dinar graded NGC Ancients Ch AU★, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (lot 780), which has an estimate of $200,000. This ancient rarity was struck during the earliest years of the Sasanian Empire, which was based in Iran and lasted more than four centuries starting in AD 224. The obverse of the Double Dinar features the bust of Shahpur I, who may be best remembered for defeating and capturing Roman Emperor Valerian in AD 260. The Gold Dinar denomination was struck much more often in Sasanian coinage, but on some important occasions, the Double Dinar denomination was also produced, making this very rare example highly desirable.
Other NGC-certified coins in this auction include:
- an Augustus Humbert 1851 "880" $50 graded NGC AU 50 (lot 459), with an estimate of $27,500
- a Judaea, Bar Kokhba Revolt (AD 132-135) Silver Sela graded NGC Ancients XF★, with 4/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface (lot 718), with an estimate of $25,000
